Urbanization and Poverty

Assisted by Gaye Soley and Yasemin Sohtorik İlkmen from our university, this project examines the impact of urbanization and poverty on the mental development of children in countries undergoing intense and rapid urbanization processes. While the amount of literature regarding the predictors of mental development in children varies according to the socioeconomic conditions of different contexts, a significant data gap is evident especially for those underpriveleged populations. To address this gap, researchers from different countries have come together to study the mental development of children in families migrating from rural to urban areas.

Within the scope of the study, researchers from Bhutan, Zimbabwe, and Türkiye collaborated with researchers at Uppsala University to monitor the development of a total of 1800 children aged 3-5 years. While all three countries were deeply affected by urbanization, there are differences regarding the unique dynamics of rural-to-urban migration between these countries. This diversity, taking into account the specific conditions of each country, has provided an opportunity to examine risk factors and protective measures on both global and regional scales.
